Christina has two kids with a third on the way, and in addition to worrying about how she’ll be able to give all three the attention they need once the new baby is born, she’s having trouble with tantrums. Both of her kids tend to throw tantrums when they don’t get what they want. Christina is looking for ways both to preemptively prevent tantrums and to handle them when they happen.

Today, we talk about insights into what’s behind the children’s tantrums. I note the value of specific, predictable, and regular rules. We talk about the importance of validating feelings instead of jumping in to fix problems, and I explain why this promotes resilience in your kids. We talk about the power of hugs and I introduce the idea of a time-in. I also note that nobody should need to share everything, and I talk about the usefulness of an Untouchable Box.

“The tantrum comes more because they don’t feel like you get it, and if you don’t get it, they’re gonna make sure that you do.”
